Our Story

About Dechant Spice

alvis-dechantDechant Spice was created over 50 years ago by Alvis Dechant. The owner of an IGA grocery store in the town of Manning in northern Alberta. Alvis used to sell local beef in his meat department. To promote local beef and his store he would host an annual BBQ that he called “The Beef Round up.” This was a great success and became a favourite event in the area.

Being passionate about meat Alvis created his spice to enhance the natural flavours of the meat he served. His spice soon became as big a hit as his BBQ. After selling his store to become a full time farmer, Alvis kept his BBQ alive by teaming up with the local chapter of the Knights of Columbus to do charity BBQs. The K Of C still do the BBQs and use our spice to this day. Alvis passed his recipe on to his son Dave with strict instructions to keep mixing and making available his spice to those who have enjoyed it over the years.

Where Are We Now?

Dave inherited his love for BBQ’ing from his dad (Alvis) and took over the business when Alvis became ill with ALS in 2000. To Dave, Alvis’ spice isn’t a commodity, it’s a tradition. Alvis wanted this tradition to carry on after his passing and we have honoured that. In the past few years, we have added new packaging and labeling enabling us to bring the spice to market.

Our Mission

We are committed to making our spice available to meat lovers everywhere with the same attention to quality that Alvis insisted on from the beginning. We have made our spice available through our retailers in Northern Alberta, Southern BC, our Facebook page and word of mouth.
